The Long View
About Pearl Nguyen
Hi, nice to meet you!
I was born and raised in Saigon, Vietnam, in a family deeply rooted in education. My grandfather was a respected educator, and both of my parents were professors. But despite their academic careers, they were also entrepreneurs out of necessity.

As Vietnam’s economy began opening up in the 90s, my parents did whatever they could to create better opportunities for our family: publishing books, selling bathroom equipment and marble tiles, opening restaurants, running catering businesses. Some ventures worked, many didn’t. But what I grew up witnessing was resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to get their hands dirty to make things happen.

Everything my family achieved came through hard work, sacrifice, and persistence. My parents took on debt and years of uncertainty to send my brother and me to the United States for school. I still remember how heavy that responsibility felt. Watching them navigate constant ambiguity shaped the way I approach life and work today: there is almost always a solution if you are willing to think hard, stay resourceful, and keep going.

Moving to the U.S. as an exchange student was also the first time I truly understood the impact people can have on someone else’s life. I had never flown on a plane before, never lived away from my family, and suddenly found myself in a completely unfamiliar environment. I was incredibly fortunate to be welcomed by a host family who treated me like one of their own. They gave me stability, warmth, and a sense of belonging during one of the biggest transitions of my life. That experience stayed with me. It taught me the importance of generosity, gratitude, and creating environments where people feel supported and seen.

Life eventually took me to Singapore, where I spent a decade building my career and friendships that still feel like family today. Later, my husband and I decided to embrace another adventure and moved to Barcelona - a city where neither of us had roots, but where we wanted to build a life together. Our son was born here, and now this place feels like home.

Looking back, I realize every chapter of my life reinforced the same themes: embracing uncertainty, building connections, staying adaptable, and finding meaning through people.

Those values shape how I lead at work. I care deeply about helping people grow, especially new managers - because I believe great teams are built through great leadership. I’ve also been incredibly fortunate throughout my career to work under amazing managers who believed in me before I believed in myself. People often say the best part of working at Google is the people, and for me, that was absolutely true. Some of my biggest lessons about leadership, trust, communication, and excellence came from the people around me.

This blog is my way of documenting those lessons and amplify them, observations from 15+ years working across global tech companies, scaling teams, solving messy problems, and now learning how leadership applies in an entirely different context: parenting.

Because it turns out leading teams and raising a tiny human have more in common than I ever expected.
